A True Wake Up Call, Spiritually and Personally Invoking.

Reading this book was genuinely a wake-up call for me. I went into it expecting an interesting discussion about why church attendance is declining, but I came away with a much broader understanding of the issue. The humility and grace with which the author approaches such a complicated and often overwhelming subject really impacted me. Rather than simply asking why people are leaving the church, the book looks toward possible solutions and, most importantly, offers hope. 

Challenging not only my perspective on the church and society, but also how we collectively as Christians sometimes view those we consider “unbelievers,” I found the discussion of the changing relationship between Americans and the church especially eye-opening. The author put words to things I had noticed but had never quite known how to explain. The book presents five reasons why Christian churches and communities are experiencing a decline in participation in the modern era. What I loved most was that these reasons did not simply point fingers at younger generations or portray them as rebellious or uninterested in faith. Instead, the book takes a step back and considers how much society, culture, relationships, and even the church itself have changed. That really resonated with me. It encouraged me to spend less time thinking about who is to blame and more time considering what the church may be missing when it comes to understanding the people it is trying to reach.

On another note, the research was another part of the book that I personally found fascinating. The author, Brad D. Nelson, not only explores the data and evidence behind the decline in church participation, but also offers a theological framework that keeps the discussion grounded in faith and Scripture. I found this combination both engaging and helpful. It challenged some of my own assumptions and helped me realize that people stepping away from church can be connected to far more than simply a loss of belief. The willingness to honestly examine the church itself and ask whether we are recognizing and responding well to the changes happening around us is already a rare perspective. Seeing that perspective presented alongside research, Scripture, and clear, thoughtful writing made it much easier for me to understand the experiences and viewpoints of those who do not regularly attend church.

Throughout reading this book, I found myself thinking not only about the larger problem of declining attendance, but about my own involvement and the kind of church community I want to help build. It reminded me that church is about much more than showing up for a service. It is about relationships, community, serving others, and intentionally becoming part of something bigger than yourself. Several chapters made me stop and think about what I could be doing differently and where I might be missing opportunities to become more involved. I appreciated that the book did not leave me simply thinking about what the church should do, it made me consider what I can do as an individual.

I also loved the Scripture reflection at the end. After reading the chapters, going back to Scripture and reflecting on those passages through the lens of what I had just learned made the experience even more meaningful for me. Overall, this book changed the way I look at church and The People Who Aren’t There. It gave me a more nuanced understanding of why these changes are happening while still leaving me with genuine hope for the future of the church. More than anything, I finished the book feeling encouraged to become more intentional about my own church community and my relationships within it.

Excellent Book, A Work Of Art

Fueling the Soul Engine was such a wonderful book to read. The book begins by exploring some of the deeper questions we encounter throughout our faith journey. Questions about who we are, our experiences, and the relationship between the soul, spirit, and God. I found his perspective highly relatable, especially because he approaches these ideas through his own life experiences rather than making the discussion feel overly academic. His personal stories gave me plenty to reflect on as I read. 

One of my favorite aspects of the book is the author's creative use of his life experience and knowledge to explain spiritual ideas. His comparison of the soul to an engine is particularly interesting, especially given his background as a mechanic. He also draws from history, American culture, war, machines, fighter aircrafts, and other experiences to build upon his understanding of the soul and spirit. I enjoyed seeing how these seemingly different subjects came together to support his larger reflections on faith and human nature.

I particularly appreciated the author’s ability to put words and perspective to experiences and emotions that can sometimes be difficult to explain. One concept that stood out to me was what he calls “shadow attractions,” referring to meaningful romantic interests that affected someone’s life even though the relationship never became an actual romance. I found this especially fascinating because it illustrates one of the book’s central ideas so well: our experiences do not simply disappear once they are over. They leave impressions on us. Throughout the book, the author reflects on the people, places, experiences, struggles, and choices that have shaped his own soul, connecting those reflections back to Scripture and his understanding of God. I loved this personal element because it made the discussion feel less like a distant study of the soul and more like an honest examination of a life lived with God. 

There is also a wonderful amount of wisdom throughout the book. Rather than simply trying to define the soul, the author uses stories, history, Scripture, and personal reflection to explore what it means to be shaped by the life we have lived. I found myself thinking about my own experiences and how they have influenced who I am today. His reflections encouraged me to consider the connection between my own life, my faith, and the ways God gives meaning to the things we experience.

I would describe this book as a work of art. Not only because it includes actual works of art, but because of the way the author brings together so many different pieces of his life and faith. Reading it sometimes felt like observing a painting and discovering something new the longer I looked at it. The concluding thought that “the spiritual gives meaning to the physical” especially resonated with me and brought the book's ideas together beautifully. This is a personal, unconventional, and reflective exploration of the soul and spirit, and it gave me quite a bit to think about after finishing it. Needless to say, I loved reading this book. This book is a deeply encouraging and faith-filled book centered around one of the most powerful gifts God has given us: prayer. Rather than treating prayer as simply a list of requests, this book presents it as an ongoing relationship with Jesus, grounded firmly in Scripture and the promises of God. I appreciated how the book continually brings the reader back to foundational biblical truths, offering both teaching and practical encouragement for those who may be praying for someone they love who is far from God.

One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is the way some chapters combine instruction, Scripture, and prayer. The teachings provide a helpful foundation for understanding why we pray and how we can remain steadfast, while the accompanying prayers give the reader an opportunity to put those truths into practice. The numerous passages of Scripture throughout the book are especially meaningful because they gave me something concrete to return to when discouragement begins to set in. This makes the book more than simply a collection of prayers; it becomes a guide for developing a stronger and more persistent prayer life.

The book also does an excellent job emphasizing perseverance. Praying for someone we love can sometimes be difficult, especially when we do not immediately see the changes or answers we are hoping for. I particularly appreciated how biblical figures and their experiences with prayer are incorporated into the book. He in Us and We in Him: A New Creation is a book that unexpectedly captured my interest and continued to draw me in the deeper I read. Through the recorded teachings of Father Michael Koblosh, the book communicates a genuine humility and a deep love and passion for Christ and His ministry. Rather than simply presenting theological ideas, these teachings encouraged me to slow down, reflect, and consider the significance of Christ and Scripture in a more personal way.

One of the sections that particularly stood out to me was “Understanding of Salvation.” I appreciated the emphasis on recognizing Jesus not only as the Son of God, but also as a real human being who lived and walked among us. The book consistently brings attention to foundational truths of the Christian faith while also exploring aspects of Scripture and Christian teaching that can sometimes be overlooked within Western Christian culture. I found this perspective both thought-provoking and refreshing.

Each teaching offers something different, with individual topics thoughtfully connected to the passages of Scripture being explored. The book provides insight into Orthodox teachings and culture while encouraging readers to engage more deeply with the Bible itself. As I progressed through the book, I found the teachings becoming increasingly meaningful and moving, with many passages giving me reason to pause and reflect on Christ, salvation, and what it means to live faithfully.

Another aspect I particularly appreciated is how each teaching continually redirects the reader's attention away from the church as an institution and back toward Christ Himself. Informative, Spiritual, Biblical.

This book approaches spiritual warfare in a way that seeks to inform and equip without over-glorifying the subject. Its purpose is clear: to give readers biblical knowledge about spiritual warfare, the tactics of the enemy, and how believers can be better equipped to “combat the enemy of our souls.” I especially appreciated how the book immediately emphasizes the importance of knowing our enemy. Through Scripture, it explores who Satan is, his origins, and his nature while consistently bringing the focus back to biblical truth.

One of my personal favorite aspects of the book is the depth with which Scripture is examined. Rather than simply quoting a passage and moving on, the author explains its meaning, connects it with other passages, and even explores the significance of the original Hebrew wording in certain places. This made the book feel like more than just a discussion of spiritual warfare; at times, I genuinely felt as though I were studying the Bible alongside the author. The deeper I read, the more confident I felt in my understanding of Scripture, God’s design for creation, and how these different biblical concepts connect.

There is also something about this book that created a sense of steadfastness in me while reading it. Learning about spiritual warfare did not leave me focused on fear or fascinated with darkness. Instead, it continually strengthened my desire to know God and His Word more deeply. I especially loved that the book takes time to discuss who Christ is and who we are in relation to Him. By covering foundational Christian truths such as Christ, the cross, God’s Kingdom, and our spiritual identity alongside spiritual warfare, the book feels balanced and grounded. I also found the sections exploring dimensions and the relationship between science and biblical concepts extremely fascinating. 

Another part I appreciated was the way the book challenges misconceptions surrounding the adversary and the spiritual world. There were several moments where I found myself nodding and thinking, “Finally, someone said it.” At the same time, it helped clarify subjects I had previously struggled to fully understand. The author explains the tactics of the enemy while also emphasizing the spiritual weapons and biblical truths believers have against deception and manipulation. Using stories and examples from Scripture makes these ideas much easier to understand and apply.

Altogether, this book genuinely helped shape and strengthen my perspective on spiritual warfare, demons, angels, the spiritual world, God’s Kingdom, science, faith, and Scripture. Topics that can easily become confusing or overwhelming were presented in a way that felt connected, understandable, and rooted in the Bible. More importantly, I walked away from this book not simply knowing more about spiritual warfare, but feeling more equipped, more confident in Scripture, and more eager to know God. It strengthened my faith and gave me a greater appreciation for the depth of His Word and the design of His creation. This is a book that didn’t just give me information, it helped me see several areas of my faith with greater clarity. Sincere, Wholesome, Fun

Everything about this book is wonderfully wholesome, creative, and genuinely enjoyable. The incredible attention to detail the author put into bringing Scrubby’s restaurant to life was my favorite thing. From the original concept and menu to the atmosphere and character interactions made it feel like a place that could actually exist. Honestly, after reading each page I found myself wishing the restaurant and world was real. The descriptions of freshly made jam, fluffy bread, chips, and milk somehow made something as simple as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich sound incredibly comforting and definitely made me hungry. I loved how the author took such a charming idea and built an entire world around it. 

I also appreciated how naturally the Christian themes were written throughout the story. Faith never felt forced into the narrative; instead, it was expressed through the characters, their conversations, relationships, and the way they approached life. There was something humble and refreshing about the way Christianity was portrayed. It made the characters feel even more genuine, as though their faith was simply a natural part of who they were rather than something the story had to constantly announce. 

The characters themselves were another highlight for me. They felt relatable, distinct, and easy to become invested in. I especially loved the friendship between Brynn and Sabrina. There is a closeness and sincerity between them that can be difficult to capture in fiction, and their interactions made their friendship feel incredibly genuine. The little jokes and casual moments between the characters were some of my favorite parts because they gave the story so much personality and made me feel like I was spending time with real people.

I also really enjoyed watching the relationship between Brynn and Dewey develop. Brynn’s initial hesitation toward romance made their dynamic even sweeter, especially when she tried to brush off the possibility that their time together could actually be considered a date. Their romance develops in a way that feels natural, allowing their chemistry and connection to grow alongside the rest of the story. I found myself genuinely rooting for them along the storyline.

Overall, this was such an enjoyable and heartwarming read. I loved how the story begins with a slower, casual feeling before gradually developing into a contemporary romance with deeper moments of drama, faith, friendship, and personal growth. At times, reading it felt almost like watching a comforting, wholesome television series where you simply enjoy being in the characters’ world. Between the memorable setting of Scrubby’s, the Christian themes, the humor, friendships, and sweet romance, there was so much to appreciate. It is the kind of story that reminds you that a book does not have to be overly dramatic to leave an impression. Sometimes warmth, sincerity, and characters you genuinely enjoy spending time with are more than enough.

His experiences across these fields have given him a unique perspective on discipline, leadership, perseverance, problem-solving, and the importance of meaningful work. 

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Hopper has devoted much of his life to his family and to serving others. He and his wife, Iva Kate, have been married for more than sixty years. They live on the Hall Family Farm near Montgomery, Alabama, and are the proud parents of two children, grandparents of five grandchildren, and great-grandparents of two great-grandchildren. Family remains an important part of Dr. Hopper's life and continues to shape his understanding of faith, relationships, responsibility, and legacy.

Motivational, Excellent, Captivating. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book was such an interesting and meaningful read. Rather than being filled with long paragraphs of explanation and evaluation, it reads almost like a collection of poetry or reflections, broken into small sections and chapters. I really appreciated this format because it gave me the opportunity to slow down and actually think about what I was reading. This is a book that intentionally asks you to think, wonder, and ponder yourself, your life, and God and I believe it accomplishes exactly that. It is wonderfully written and paced in a way that allowed me to read, pause, reflect, and sometimes go back and read something again. I genuinely feel like I grew from this book in such a short amount of time.

One of my favorite quotes is, “The true self is rooted in being, rather than proving.” There are so many small passages like this throughout the book that left me feeling hopeful, encouraged, and motivated in my faith. At times, it felt like God was speaking directly to areas of my life through what I was reading. At the heart of the book is a question I think we all ask ourselves at some point: Who am I becoming? Who am I meant to become? The author explores the identity God gave us from the beginning of creation, how that identity becomes distorted by the world and the people around us, and how God begins peeling back the layers and masks we have accumulated. I especially loved the reminder that beneath all of those layers, what God created was already enough.

Like the other books in this series, this book also returns to Genesis and explores the idea that there is something important we often miss when reading the creation story. I loved the way the author connected this back to identity and explained how it affects us not only as people and Christians, but as God's children. This perspective awakened me to something new in Scripture while also reigniting something in my own heart that I felt had been missing. Chapter by chapter, I was reminded that God has given me a name, He knows the deepest parts of me, and I do not have to construct my identity from labels, masks, accomplishments, successes, or what other people expect me to be. There was something incredibly freeing about that reminder.

I also appreciated how the book touches on things we may easily overlook. One of the smaller passages that stayed with me was about silence and stillness. It made me think about how surrounded we are by noise—not only literal noise, but expectations, opinions, distractions, and all the different voices competing for our attention. The reflection on silence reminded me how important stillness can be when trying to discern what truly matters. I also loved how naturally all of the subjects connect: who we are becoming, our names and identities, what God says about us through creation, who the world tells us to become, and ultimately redemption. There is so much wisdom packed into these pages, yet the author carries the reader through each subject with gentleness rather than making the book feel overwhelming.

Overall, this felt like more than simply reading a book; it felt like a heartfelt and awakening journey. It reminded me to look beyond the labels and expectations I have attached to myself and return to the identity God has already given me. This is the kind of book I can see myself returning to whenever I need to slow down, reflect, or simply spend intentional time with God. It left me feeling hopeful, encouraged, and reminded of who I am in Him.

Exciting, Awakening, Uplifting

I felt an immediate connection with both this book and the author. This book constantly had me on my toes wanting to know and read more. There is something about the way the author, Steve Bruner, approached familiar ideas that immediately made me want to keep reading, reflecting, and discovering what I may have previously overlooked.

Reading this book felt a lot like looking into a mirror, except instead of pointing out your flaws, it reveals what you may have been missing all along. It challenges the illusions we sometimes see in our own reflection and replaces them with something clearer and more truthful. What I especially appreciated was that the author doesn't simply point out these distorted ways of seeing ourselves; the book explores why they happen and continually brings the reader back to the truth found in Scripture. There were moments when that truth genuinely snapped me out of an old way of thinking and helped me see myself, God, and even humanity differently.

A favorite aspect of mine is the topics explored and subjects that are frequently discussed. Things like sin, forgiveness, redemption, Adam and Eve, temptation, trust, and our relationship with God, but somehow this book and writing makes them feel deeper than the explanations we are used to hearing. Instead of sticking with the surface-level lessons many of us already know, the author gets to the root of them and gives language to things we may recognize internally but have never known how to describe. There were quite a few moments when I had to stop, think “wait, what?” and reread something because it challenged me to think deeper. The exploration of trust and the story of Adam and Eve especially changed the way I thought about something I believed I already understood. Each discussion is like seed and nutrients to grow you not only personally, but spiritually as well.

I also really enjoyed the exploration of the Enneagram, I found this topic through the book to be surprising and intriguing. Rather than simply explaining what it is at face value, the author incorporates it into a much larger conversation about identity, humanity, and understanding ourselves. I loved seeing psychological insight and biblical reflection come together, especially because the different concepts throughout the book have a way of connecting back to one another. Nothing felt included simply for the sake of being interesting; it all contributed to the larger purpose of the book: helping each person see past the illusions reflected in the mirror and uncover what is actually true.

In conclusion, this book deeply impacted me to my core. The topics were thought provoking and intentional, while the writing was moving, inspirational, and awakening. Each page has a way of staying with you long after you’ve read it. Sometimes I even find myself thinking back to certain parts of the book that strongly resonated with me when something in my own life reminds me of them. I think that speaks to just how meaningful this book was for me. It didn’t simply give me something to read; it gave me something to carry with me. It encouraged me to reflect, question, grow, and look at myself and my faith through a clearer lens. This is the kind of book that meets you where you are while challenging you to see beyond what you thought you already knew, and that’s why I loved reading it tremendously.

Educational, Impressive, and Captivating

From the introduction alone, I could tell that The Miracle of America was going to be an educational and captivating read. The book immediately emphasizes why understanding history and politics matters, reminding readers that many of the ideas and foundations that shaped America have gradually been forgotten. It encouraged me to revisit my knowledge about my country and challenged me to ask important questions that I had honestly never stopped to consider before: "What is the American ethic? Where does it come from? How does the Bible relate to this ethic?" Those questions immediately drew me in and set the stage for an engaging exploration of America's origins.

As the author, Angela E. Kamrath writes, "The Miracle of America is a comprehensive study of America's philosophical origins or founding ethic and its relation to the Bible," and accurately so, the book is just that. Every chapter is packed with well-researched information covering topics such as popular sovereignty, the Protestant Reformation, the Pilgrims, the Mayflower, religious identity, and the influence of biblical and Judeo-Christian principles on America's founding. I have never considered myself a history enthusiast. Because of that, I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book nearly as much as I did. What surprised me most was how engaging and approachable the writing was. I found myself genuinely interested in subjects I normally would have overlooked. Before reading this book, I never fully realized just how much the Bible and Judeo-Christian principles influenced America's founding. Seeing Scripture tied together so naturally throughout the historical discussion was both refreshing and fascinating. I also appreciated that the author doesn't try to persuade readers to support a particular political party. Instead, she simply encourages us to know our history, examine the historical evidence for ourselves, and become more informed about the foundations upon which America was built.

I also admired the author's honesty throughout the book. It's hard to put into words just how incredibly brilliant this book is. I could tell immediately that this was going to be a meaningful read. What initially seemed like an abstract concept quickly unfolded into something thoughtful, insightful, and deeply relatable. It's rare that I come across a concept that genuinely changes the way I think, but the "Dawns" did exactly that, offering a beautiful framework for understanding the different stages of faith, growth, and the human journey. Every chapter left me with the same feeling: that the author had somehow found words for experiences and truths I'd long understood but never knew how to express.

I was captivated by how the author honestly wrestles with both simple and profound questions about life, humanity, and God. I especially loved the emphasis on the humanity of Jesus, a perspective that I don't often see explored in such a thoughtful way. The discussion of things like the soul, the "soulprint," and the Dawns themselves gave language to experiences that many Christians recognize but often struggle to describe like myself. The idea that each awakening strips away illusion and draws us closer to the person God created us to be deeply resonated with me.
